Design Autopsy #6: Behind the Scenes of the Hideous and Perfect Photo and Video shoot
By Destroyx | December 21, 2009

This edition of design autopsy is going to look behind the scenes of the photoshoot for the Hideous and Perfect CD artwork and the Fuck the Revolution video shoot.

We had to work to an extremely tight budget for the shoot and had to call upon many favours just to make it happen. So we are extremely grateful for all of the hardworking team that assisted us on the day.
I worked with makeup extraordinaire Karen Hopwood in developing the distinctive makeup looks featured in the shoot. Karen has worked with countless musicians in creating unique fashion forward looks that completely transform or enhance the subjects personality. Her clients include some of my favourite musicians such as Cyndi Lauper, the Gossip and the infamous Lady Gaga!
The awesome asymmetrical hair was created by Lyndall Vile from X-Lox. She is an up and coming hair stylist who has won many awards recently, and is definitely someone to watch out for in the future.
The video was shot by Thomas Marcusson, a close friend and ally from design school. He was assisted by two of my other design school buddies, Stephanie Rajalingam (amazing french wallpaper designer) and Ole Magnus Saxegard (incredible motion graphics genius… check out this animation of his).

The crew: Helen White (photography), Ole Magnus Saxegard (video), Steph Rajalingam (video, catering, general assistant), Thomas Marcusson (live action director), Brad (fix-it dude and gaffer).

We decided to create a video that had more of a visual narrative, rather than a literal one. Instead of coming up with a complex storyline, we just wanted to play around with various kinds of lighting, such as fluorescent tubes, hanging lightbulbs and a huge vintage surgery sign. Thomas the live action director shot lots of video on the day in a very unstructured manner. Shooting this way has its advantages because a lot is left up to chance and the team will often come up with shots that would never have been planned. The down side, is that when you come to the editing process, there is a lack of structure to basis your edit on and it can be tricky to develop a flow and logic to the piece.
The long and often unpleasant task of editing fell upon me. Although it was challenging, I’m happy I was able to finish the project within the given time frame and come up with something that I feel did justice to the footage.

Here you can see my super messy desk mid way through the editing process. Note the sign on my monitor which says ‘The way out is through’ - My artist friend Steve told me that once and it really helped me get through the grueling process.

Here is my desk several weeks later, notably messier. Spot the packet of chips and the bottle of latex polish.

The makeup design for Hideous and perfect really amazing, it looks Photoshoped! The video turned out great, nice editing!

Wow…. you edited all that awesomeness yourself?!
You’ve got some serious skills little lady.

Awesome. Love the song, love the video. The makeup on you just looks awesome. Very well done. :)

This is one of the most interesting and unique concepts I’ve seen for a while. Everything on TV these days is much of the same - which isn’t neccessarily bad, I guess, since it makes the little masterpieces like this stand out all the more. The make-up and design of this video just blew me away, as did the Hideous and Perfect album the first time I heard it.
You should definitely be proud of yourself, and of your team. Not only for coming up with the idea, but for putting it together and editing it yourself. It’s a beautiful personal touch, in my opinion, that just makes the video all that more special. Fantastic work is definitely an understatement, in this case. ;)

Your make-up and hair (and outfit) is absolutely astounding! And I didn’t realise you did the editing as well - yet another string to your bow, A :) I notice the production planner on your wall as well, with the weeks X’d off - shows your incredible organisation skills.
I hope you get some time off to relax now and move into your new place properly :)

It’s really interesting to see behind the scenes for the video. Your make-up is so amazing - I can’t believe it wasn’t photoshopped at all! And I love the set – did you make that all yourselves too?
The video is awesome in design, aesthetics and creative flow – serious props on the editing! You really are a girl of many talents~ ♥

Ah-mazing! <3 I thought the make up was photoshopped =O haha great to see that you can look gorgeous without editing so! You and Z00G’s outfits are amazing :) ‘The way out is through’ that is an interesting quote maybe I should write that on poster paper and stick it on my wall :)

“the way out is through” I adore that quote, I have it tattooed across my back but i learned of it from a Nine inch nails song, very inspiring song if you ever want to look it up =)
you did an amazing job with the video, i think it fit the song perfectly.

Charvelle- Thanks for the compliment sweet heart! I am super proud of the whole team for making it turn out much better than I could have ever dreamed!
Pash- Aww… It’s the first video I’ve ever finished myself, so I’m happy with how it turned out. It ended up taking longer and being harder than I expected. But I’m happy I got to do it!
Tae Dark- Thanks for the compliment!
Ja- Aww.. thanks so much for that really nice compliment. It makes me feel so happy that you appreciate all of the effort that went into the video. It makes it a lot harder when you do everything yourself, but it makes it worth it in the end for sure.
trashtastika- Thanks Leanne! Yeah it was a lot of hard work! Hah.. you noticed the production planner! The only problem is, I’m good at planning but not so great at finishing stuff off.
Disposable Darling- Latex from Jane Doe Latex (I’m going to do a post about her soon.. she’s one of my favourite latex designers) and I made Zoog’s outfit.
Terradoll- Yup we made everything including the set. We did all of the set design too in a kind of random fashion and it worked out great (thankfully… it could have been a disaster!)
Bianca- Yeah I heard the quote from a friend and it really helped me get through the tough times!
Cyanide- Ohh.. you had that tattooed on you! That’s awesome. I have to look the song up. I am a huge fan but I didn’t know they did a song like that. I should check it out! Thanks for the heads up.
