Introducing Miss X Aesthetic Laboratories

By Destroyx | April 14, 2009

I am super excited and proud to unveil my latest project ‘Miss X Aesthetic Laboratories’ a new brand of cosmetic products for those who like their colours loud, their eyelashes long and their makeup fierce.

The debut collection is inspired by the collision of avant-garde high fashion, glam, fetish and Japanese street fashion. The line consists of 28 highly pigmented loose eyeshadows, 19 ‘Vicious Streak’ gel eyeliners, 8 ultra fine glitters, 10 false eyelashes and a range of high quality beauty tools which are available online exclusively at surgeon-x.com

Stay tuned for more promotional photographs, colour swatches and makeup tutorials.

The Background Story

I’ve always been interested in makeups power to transform the wear. Makeup is definitely one of my favourite artistic pursuits and I constantly am on the lookout for quality products, bright colours and unusual false eyelashes. My obsession with finding the perfect shade of red and the blackest black usually hurt my bank balance as I found myself as a self confessed MAC addict (I still am!). I often get emails from people wondering where they can also get the same makeup that I use onstage and in photoshoots for an affordable price. This caused me to start thinking about the possibilities of starting my own affordable yet high quality makeup line.

I have always believed that ‘beauty’ is something that is artificially constructed which requires artistry, effort and time. Many makeup companies emphasise the ‘natural’ aspect of beauty, and I wanted to go in the opposite direction completely and embrace the artificial.

So over the past few months I’ve been researching and developing my own line, based on my experiences as a performer and makeup artist. I’ve paid a lot of attention to functionality, cost and design and I will be continually designing products based on the needs of my customers. I hope if you get a chance to use some of these products you will enjoy wearing them!

Yay! It’s nice to hear someone else agree with embracing unnatural looking makeup. It’s so easy (Boring!) and overrated to be natural-looking.

Bring on the bright colors and long lashes! :D

Are you blending your own colors or is a company making it for you and you’re just branding it?

  6. Libby Bulloff Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 11:52 am

Shiny. Look at all those tasty bright colors. Looking forward to playing with it! Well done, lady!

Wow, wow, wow! You are the perfect covergirl for your own line.
Everything looks amazing and the branding is exceptional. Go you!

YESSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!! I looked on surgeon-x the other day and found the new makeup line and was so excited to see so many pretty gel liners. I think I might start turning from MAC gel liners to your own line ;D I’m so happy for you that you started your own makeup line.

Cute eyelashes by the way. They would stab my eye balls ’till they become blind if I wore them though…D’=

  9. Fiend Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 1:48 pm

Wow! This line looks great, the brushes are so pretty, and if the colours are as bright as you say they are, this should be awesome. Will these be made in Australia? It would be great to see you keep things local.

I love the teasers for the new line and I’m very interested to see where you go with it. All the best of luck and many hugs!

I honestly HAVE been looking for a true red eyeshadow, only to be disappointed over and over again. Hopefully your line will come to my rescue!

I’m so curious about the whole process, though! Like…how do you even get started? I imagine you’d have to go from apothecary to apothecary, looking for the one that carries just the right sort of crushed beetles for those really vibrant hues.

  12. Jennifer Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Out of curiosity (particularly RE: the ‘crushed beetles’ comment above), do any of these products happen to be vegan-friendly? I’d love to try them, but not at the expense of animals.

  13. Destroyx Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Fushia Starr- Yay for unnatural makeup! Life is way too short for that. I am blending all of the colours myself and controlling what ingredients go into them, how shiny or translucent they are and so forth. It’s been a big learning process for me! I have so much more to learn before I can tackle lip stick though =)

Libby Bulloff - Thanks sweetie! I’m looking forward to having a play myself. I’ve been sitting around developing each individual colour but haven’t had much of a chance to really play with the colour combos yet.

Ms Constantine- Awww… you make me blush. Thanks so much for your positive vibes. I appreciate it so much!

Ashley - YAY! I’m glad you’re excited about it too! I love the MAC gel liners too and it was cool to actually design some colours which they don’t have.

Fiend- Pretty much everything has been made here in Australia. Though, this may change later on in the year if I relocate to the states.

    Kali_Lynn- *hugs*

Alice- Yes.. the hunt for the true RED is something I am always on the lookout for. I created two reds, one metallic red called ‘Mund auf Augen Zu’ which is more on the warmer side of red and one called ‘Car Crash Red’ which is a satin red and is more on the blue side of red. Red is a really complex colour to make, and it was hard to formulate the perfect colour. When you see the swatches you will be able to see the difference between the two =)

I spend most of the time developing the right pigments and colours from many suppliers. It’s a tedious process actually! One day I want to travel to Morocco to go right into the heart of the colour making process. I think it would be amazing!

  14. Samantha Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Congratulations! The brush set is adorable, love the packaging on everything.

  15. Destroyx Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

Jennifer- I am just in the process of getting a FAQ about the ingredients onto the website actually =) All but 2 of the products are vegan friendly. The two that aren’t are Ice Cream and Car Crash Red. The only way to get that super bright red is to use this ingredient. The other reds derived from Iron Oxide are not bright enough. There are a few synthetic compounds that can substitute carmine, however they are not yet approved by the FDA for use around the eyes and I wouldn’t want to use anything like that because some pigments are carcinogenic. I will keep my eye out for new research on some of these new bright dyes which I might be able to put into future products.

Anyhow, the rest of the products are 100% vegan friendly… with the only things being harmed are minerals. =)

Samantha- Aww.. thanks sweetie. I gotta send you some for your website and stuff! Your comment means so much to me!

As soon as I get paid I simply *must* purchase something! The lashes in particular appeal to me - I’ve never actually worn them before, but I may just have to lose my false lash virginity for a set that match my hair!

    Hey DX.

i was wondering, on the Surgeon-X website, my fave products only have limited numbers in stock. with my business taking off next week, ill be able to afford them in a few weeks but what if my fave colours are out of stock? will they be restocked often or will i have to wait ages? I hope not.

I was REALLY excited when you told me of this project and im glad it worked out.

love love love it. i cant wait to wear makeup from my favourite band.

  23. Jennifer Says:

Thank you :) That makes me incredibly happy. I know Xenia has a similar deal with her Lime Crime range, so I figured it was worth asking.

  24. Destroyx Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 9:08 pm

Vixel- Hehe… ‘false lash virginity’- You’re cute. Once I lost mine.. I couldn’t go back. I don’t have ANY eyelashes so I fake it all of the time =) Do you have red hair?

djkittenmiss- I am a makeup addict too.. So I totally feel your pain missy.

Persephone 66 - YAY! This line was made for people like you!

Typhoid - *squish* You’re too cute.

Videokid- YAY Glitter for all! BTW… these are glitters, not glitter eyeshadow. You’ll have to put something sticky underneath for it to stick properly. I will do a tutorial on it!

goddessoffuck- Yeah the stock is getting a bit low on Surgeon-x.com because people were buying up big on certain colours so our numbers are quite down. If you email me at amelia@destroyx.com with what colours you were after I can make sure I make some more stock for a few weeks time.

Jennifer- Yeah I am trying to use as natural materials as possible because it’s better for people as it reduces allergies too =)

  25. The Merch Girl Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

Hurrah, someone else that embraces the idea of makeup as transformation! I don’t see the point of using makeup to look more like yourself, unless you’re trying to correct for dodgy lighting or something.

How strong are your colours? I’ve got medium-brown skin and too many products look cool but don’t show up on my skin. MAC is often recommended for people like me, since they do colours well, but what about yours? I’d like to support small business :)

  26. The Merch Girl Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

Also it might help to have surgeon-x.com linked somewhere on your site, if not this post itself…

  27. Ashe Mischief Says:
    April 14th, 2009 at 10:56 pm

Definitely email me about it, pretty lady! I love a good excuse to put on lots of yummy make-up colors and preen in front of the camera ;)

  28. Destroyx Says:
    April 15th, 2009 at 9:47 am

The Merch Girl- The colours are super strong and very concentrated. I pretty much wear MAC all of the time because i don’t have the lightest skin tone either and it was the only brand that actually showed up on my skin.

In my research I found out that most companies cut their colours with a lot of talc and other fillers to ’stretch’ their colours out. I don’t do this and the result is a very bright result.

Ooops I thought I linked the website several times on the post. I will recheck it now. Thanks for the pointer.

This looks amazing! I’m especially intrigued by the “Teenage Angst” eyelashes, I love purple and have attempted to create the effect those lashes would probably give with lilac mascara…not really so showstopping.

I’ve been reading your blog for awhile and love it. You are definitely a huge inspiration.

That makeup collection looks awesome and right up my alley. I love the “artificial” aspect of beauty. I’m a MAC addict also because no other makeup’s pigments are as rich as MAC’s.

  31. Lisa Says:
    April 16th, 2009 at 2:47 am

I’m totally with you on the artificial side of makeup. I think “natural” makeup is boring, phony, and self-defeating. I love your new makeup line, the eyelashes, brushes, and names of the eyeshadows - those must be fun to come up with. It all looks very luscious. I would definitely get some if I ever wore makeup. Teach me to apply makeup in a way that’s not totally crap for my face!

Omg,I’m going to school to be an make-up artist and seeing these bright colors just made me jump for joy .

  33. Steph Says:
    April 16th, 2009 at 9:42 am

How ironic, I’m just starting to get back into makeup. I’ve never been a big fan of the natural look. I loooooove the much more exciting costume-ish look so much more. Unfortunately I have no where to wear it lol. I usually settle for semi-dramatic eye makeup and glitter, so this collection looks p e r f e c t. Also looking forward to the tutorials as well. Every bit helps!

I would like to know if the ingredients are suitable for vegans

  43. Destroyx Says:
    May 23rd, 2009 at 11:27 am

daniel- Our line is tested on humans not animals!

There are no animal ingredients except for 2 colours which contain carmine- car crash red and ice cream. Carmine comes from beetles.

Awesome inspiration all round! Thanks. :)
