Design Autopsy #3: Endzeit Bunkertracks IV

By Destroyx | March 5, 2009

Late last year I designed the artwork for Belgium label Alfa Matrix’s well known compilation Endzeit Bunkertracks, a 4 CD collection of some of the world’s newest and freshest dark electro, power noise, techno body music and industrial.

I just received my copies in the mail and I was so excited about how the artwork turned out that I wanted to share with you the images of the final product.

Process

The Alfa Matrix label wanted something which fit into the pre-existing style established by the previous Endzeit Bunkertracks graphic designers. Its previous brand colours were black, red and grey.

Overall it was quite a challenging job to organise properly, as there were 68 tracks to include, as well as artist profile photographs and credits. I created a grid system which allowed me to systematically include all of the band photographs in a visually appealing yet consistent manner.

Aesthetically I decided that strong typography and texture suited the feel of the music. To find some unique textures I went to a second hand record store to find the crustiest and most worn out cardboard sleeves to scan in. I also scanned in some coffee stains and drip marks that I made with spray paint and ink.

Since the design relied so much on organic texture, I opted for matte paper to be used on the cardboard carton. The type on the cardboard cover was also enhanced by a spot varnish print which gave a glossy contrast to the matte surface of the cover (which you can see in the top photo of the cover).

Those are some seriously awesome designs. They are very creative; the design is very aggressive and edgy. It suits the music perfectly!

This is amazing. I’m the kind of person that really studies the artwork that accompanies a cd and I can really see that a lot of care and effort went to making this. Beautiful work!

Yummm, great typography! It’s really cool to see what effects can be created by scanning textures–that’s something I’ve yet to explore.

I’m only tackling student projects now, so just thinking about taking on something as challenging as this makes me feel a little queasy! But the end result is so awesome that it’s also quite encouraging!

    Wow.
That is pretty damn fantastic. :D
(The last few pictures remind me of ‘Dementium: The Ward’ on DS!)

Videokid- Yeah I put a lot of work into it! At the time I was cursing about it, but I think it was worth it though.

Ash- Yay.. I’m glad you think so. It’s so important that the design matches the music.

    Twisted- Thanks

Wyatt- It’s becoming a lost art because not many people even see the artwork because of downloading.. but I’m glad you appreciate it!

Blitz- Yay! I’m glad you like it!

simi- it definitely is.. I mean.. you send it off to the other side of the world and then you hope that you didn’t stuff anything up.

Snowy - It’s quite pricey.. but worth it

Alice - Scanning is awesome.. you will get a lot of cool effects. It makes everything unique and non computer looking. I highly recommend it.

    psyanides - Thanks dude!!
