The Diary of Miss X: 19-01-09
By Destroyx | January 19, 2009

HARD WORK: I began to realise this week that I had to start working really hard on my projects for deadlines to be met. So I’ve started concentrating heavily on music for our new album and planning for a mammoth photo and video shoot which is happening in a month.

NEW COLOUR EXPERIMENTATION: I used to be afraid of wearing colours other than red/black/white, but I’ve vowed this year to start trying new colours out. Turquoise and teal are my new favourite colours because they compliment red and grey wonderfully. At the moment my favourite MACĀ shades are Stormwatch (dark turquoise), Moonflower (shimmery mid blue), Deep Truth (shimmery royal blue), Knight Divine (pearly black), Tilt (frosty mauve), Swimming (shiny green) and Juxt (shimmery yellowy green).

LITTLE INSPIRING THINGS: I find that wearing my red glittery Dorothy shoes (Xmas present from Zoog) around the house can lift any heavy mood. I’ve also been re-reading one of my favorite books ‘Do you!’ by Russel Simmons which is incredibly inspiring. Lastly I’ve just started to read ‘The Happy Stripper- Pleasure & Politics of the New Burlesque’ which is proving to be quite thought provoking. Secretly I’m one of those lipstick feminists who likes to read women’s studies literature in her spare time =)

INVENTING IS FUN: I like nothing more than to rummage about in my studio, creating and inventing new accessories. The polka dot bow tie is a birthday present for my best friend. In the photo you can also see a ribbon and lace cravat I created as well as a giant satin bow (which when worn is pretty much an antennae for happy feelings).

HULA HOOPING: This week I decided to give in to hoop mania (I blame Gala Darling entirely). I found that I am totally hopeless at it! However, I also found out that I was using child sized hoops that were much too light, so I ordered a larger adult sized hoop this week. I’m getting a custom made sparkly red, black and silver one from this website. I am so excited about it!

MATERIAL HUNTING: Much of this week was spent hunting down wardrobe, finding materials, organising suppliers, locating hair stylists & makeup artists and designing costumes. It’s going to get a little more intense in the next few weeks I’m afraid, as I am embarking on the most ambitious project of mine to date. Above you can see some of the amazing leather I sourced to make some accessories and wardrobe out of.

NOT SEEING NICK CAVE: Sadly, due to monetary constraints, I was unable to go to see Nick Cave this weekend. However, I did find this delightful poster which had been amusingly defaced.

CULTURE JAMMING: Although I don’t agree with the sentiment of the culture jammers here, I think it’s a good example of how street art can be about forming a dialogue between advertisers, community members and artists - a line of communication which doesn’t often exist in the gallery world.
I hope this next week will be full of productivity and fun for all of you!

YAY A NEW ALBUM! =DD Can’t wait for it. I too am hopeless at hula hooping. I can’t get the motion right I guess, haha.

Your creations are great and inspiring me to get my D.I.Y projects under way. I think it’s so funny that you’re a “undercover lipstick feminist”, because I too love reading inspiring feminist lit!

Do You! is also one of my fav books! :) xx

i find it so funny that make-up wise your venturing into colors like greens and blues, and i’m venturing into colors like red.. i have like, three of the colors you showed above. good luck with your color mission!

I love those shoes! I found some in Sydney but sadly not my size…
But wow, I bought a sparkly pink and blue hulahoop yesterday, so that’s a fun coincidence! Galadarling ’s post reminded me I had to get another more quieter model as my old purple one has beads in it and alerts my partner to my hoop mischief around the house! haha

I’m curious what’s going to be the style and main message of the new album… and what it’ll probably will sound like (I mean, it’s going to be even heavier than BDI?) ^^
Turquoise is nice ^^ I personally prefer silver+black eye makeup…
Hula hoops! I was a huuuge fan of it when I was a kid xD I was even not so bad at it. I had firstly a pink-and-white one, and then a red-and white.
And of course, I love your creations (and the shoes!)
xoxo from your loyal fan

I would totally take that blue hula hoop off your hands. :P It looks so pretty!
Anywayz, the better you get at controlling the hoop and start doing tricks. STRETCH OUT BEFORE YOU HOOP! I learned the hard way by pulling a muscle that covers the ribs. It’s VERY painful. I couldn’t turn over in bed without almost crying. I would wake up because it hurt when I turned over in my sleep! It took a few weeks to heal and even now I’m hesitant to lift anything heavy because it will occasionally hurt. This is my cautionary warning to anyone that starts hooping!
But anyway, I hope you have more success! Be patient, get a music player and go at it. It’s totally fun!
And I love your shoes as well. :)

(I think I also meant to say that you’ll get better at using the child’s size once you get used to holding the hoop up with the heavier size. BUT! you’ll feel like you’re starting over)

Hoop mania is certainly spreading throughout the blogosphere! I got a cute hoop (pink- and reminds me of a candy-cane!) on the weekend- but I can only do 4 revolutions MAXIMUM, and it falls down! Bah! (I could do it in primary school!). Hmmmm….but maybe I need a heavier one too?
Good luck with your projects! )though I’m sure you won’t need it!) You seem to lead such an interesting and creative life!
I love all your eyeshadows….gimme the frosty mauve one! I’m trying to get myself away from red/pink/black/white, but it’s hard when they make me feel so good!
And lastly: Dorothy shoes!!!! I’m constantly on the lookout for the perfect pair of Dorothy heels! How could red glitter on your feet not put you in a good mood! Squeee!!!!

HOOPS! :O Hoops are so much fun^^ It’s been ages since I’ve done it though, I’ve got too litle space in my room to try it xD And it’s way too cold outside, so I can’t try it there either! Not that I have the time anyway…Math test :S And I suck at math :S
Ooh, I like your eyeshadows! I planned on getting an outfit togheter that consists of the colours black/blue(/grey)^^ I was all black and red at a party Saturday, it was fun =)
I really want to work on my own projects :S It’s just that school is important too (though I have classes I don’t even need for what I want to study/become) and such..it still would be nice to have some more free time! If I ever want to start a shop with my own clothes/accessoires/sweets/living items (like..pillows =3), I should really get to learn alot of sewing tricks >< And if I ever want to perform, I should take more time for lyric-writing and thinking about the music. It’s pretty annoying to have so little time for the things you’d like to do because of homework for classes you don’t even like (like math..I chose math, so I would have more choices when looking for a study later…but gosh, I hate it and I’m not good at it)
So, enough ranting! I have an enlish listening-test the next hour, and I want to write a little before that. Have a nice day!

The title “The Happy Stripper” sounds intriguing to be honest. I’d love to read it…. I think I’ll try to check it out. Thanks for that!
And good luck with your projects! I have a feeling they’ll be fabulous.

Twisted- Yup. it should be out later in the year! this means mega world tour and hell!!! Woohoo.. I’m SO EXCITED!
Ashley - I’m hopeless too… but I think that with practise I’ll get it going!
Stylish Thought - Yay for undercover feminists! I mean, I think I am actually a feminist but because I didn’t do Women Studies sometimes I think I’m not feminist enough for the feminists at my uni. Good luck with your projects sweetie, I wanna see what you make =)
Bianca - Really? That’s so freaking awesome! This is my second time reading it.. he’s so cool. I mean the cover looks funny but it’s so down to earth and helpful.
Rae- Hehe! We are swapping our colourways! We are being brave! You must have good taste then.. =P
Mademoiselle Baudelaire- I love sparkly shoes. Mine are from Topshop but they have nice ones from Pleaser or Demonia too. Yeah mind had beads in it too.. it is too loud. I can’t wait to get my new one too!
Murdercute1994 - The new album is going to be heavier… it’s going to be fucked up! I can’t reveal much because it’s still embryonic at the moment
Miss Laurabell- I wear converse all of the time! I love them… You can start your shoe collection today too!! =) I might do some tutorials in the future. I just need to develop stuff that doesn’t require specialist tools, I use way too many things like rivets that people can’t get ahold of.
Brandy - Thanks for the tips dude! I got a really sore tummy the other week because I didn’t stretch. So I will heed your advice definitely!
simi- Yeah I can’t do more than 4 revolutions either. I think you might need a heavier hoop as well. Apparently you can do the child size hoop after you get good at the adult size one because the bigger one goes slower.
I find that I’m like you… I am so inspired by my favourite colours, I don’t ever use other ones! So I wanted to try something different, but I know where my heart lies =)
I know… red glitter *drool*… they cheer me up every time I look down at my feet! I like black glittery ones too.
Lady Hypocryte - your outfit sounded cool.. i love black and red. I know it’s annoying to be in school.. but keep at it, it’s worth it! Good luck with your school.
Thorn- the happy stripper is very interesting… it goes through the neo burlesque craze and looks at it within the context of burlesque history, it’s relationship to the world of exotic dancing and current feminist critique. Very interesting read for those who have ever questioned their own experiences of neo-burlesque (which I love!) Thanks for your well wishes sweetie!

Woooot! Girl crush ahoy!
January 19th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
If the new album is going to be even heavier than BDI… I’m already impatient :D
January 20th, 2009 at 12:15 am
Wow!

I was always more of a jumprope person myself. I”m digging those eyeshadow colors! I just recently started wearing make up and am still stuck with the traditional bowns and greens. Do you have any recommendations for a newbie trying to branch out a bit more into more adventuresome make up styles? Books? Websites?
January 21st, 2009 at 12:35 pm
XD The moment I saw the hoola hoops, a big smile came across my face. I recently rediscovered how much fun hoola hoops can be myself this last fall, and enjoy going to toy stores and wal-mart for the sole purpose of hooping. I’ve also found that the bigger the hoop is, the easier it is to get more revolutions.
:D Can’t wait for a new album!!
Heavier sounds exciting!
and I absolutely love the angelspit shirt I recently bought off of Isotank
January 21st, 2009 at 1:40 pm
kat- When I was a kid I did the jumprope thing too because I was crap at hooping, but now I’m having another go at it. If you want to try more experimental makeup, I love xsparkage.com, petrilude.com and doedeereblogazine.com. They all do great makeup tutorials. I might be doing some in the future.
aL3x- That’s good to know about the size of the hoops… Hooping is a lot of fun.. even if you are bad at it like me =) Yay… thanks for supporting us sweetie!
January 25th, 2009 at 11:25 am
A new album? Sweet! ^_^
Haha! Hula hoops are fun! I just can never get how other people make it look sexy and I look like such an amatuer! xD
But have you seen how the Moscow Circus performers work with hula hoops?
It was downright amazingly coooool.
It’s very nice you’re learning how to hula hoop! Maybe you can show us how you work it on your next live performance? ;D
Turquoise and teal are kinda tricky to work with when pairing it with red, so I’m glad you were able to incorporate those colour palettes together! =]
I’m still trying to figure out how I can make red an pink go together so I can start making Valentine Cards!! ^_^
Sounds like you’re having a(nother) busy week! Good luck with everything and take care!

Ha! I recently had to read The Happy Stripper for a final report! Great book! (Hopefully a great paper, too…)
