Makeup Mayhem: Madame Bones

By Destroyx | May 21, 2009

Eyes: Tormentor Eyeliner, Doll Parts, Black Alice, Confusion, Amphibian & Crime Pays eyeshadow, Two Faced Shadow Insurance, MAC Liquid Eyeliner in ‘Boot Black’ for the beauty spot, MAC Eye Kohl in ‘Smolder’, MAC Water Based Mixing Medium.

Eyelashes: Both eyelashes cut in half - Whip It & Purr

Lips: MAC Lip GelĂ©e, MAC Dark Side lipstick & Tormentor eyeliner (as I didn’t have black lipstick on hand)

Face: MAC Studio Fix, MAC Select Cover-up, my own concoction of rose red blush.

Apply foundation with a foundation brush to get that ‘airbrushed’ look (I’ll talk more about this in my makeup basics post later on). Next use a translucent powder to set the base and minimises pores.

On the apples of the cheeks apply a circle of rose red blush. You don’t need to continue the blush onto the high cheekbones as we are going for a ‘doll like’ appearance.

Apply primer on the eyelids all the way up to the brow bone and under the eyes before applying the loose eyeshadow.

Using a small eyeshadow brush apply Black Alice (sparkly black eyeshadow) on the upper eyelid and around to underneath the eye. With a clean brush apply Crime Pays (metallic green) around the black. Next apply Confusion (lime yellow) around the green eyeshadow up to the brow bone, but do not continue to underneath the eye. Instead continue the line with Amphibian (olive green gold) and apply liberally to the outer half of the eye blending it outwards. Lastly apply Doll parts on the brow bone and the inner eye for a sparkly highlight.

To intensify the colour of the loose pigments, I used MAC Water Based Mixing medium to apply the powder wet, however water would work fine too. When the eyeshadow has dried (if you applied the colours wet), blend each colour together using a clean fluffy eyeshadow brush (start with the lightest colour first). Line your waterline with a black pencil eyeliner and apply Tormentor gel eyeliner on the upper lid.

Apply Purr false eyelashes to the outer corner of the bottom lash line and Whip it on the upper lashes. Here I decided to cut the eyelashes in half because it suited my eyeshape better. False eyelash length will definitely vary from person to person, so it’s important to experiment and see what suits your eye shape. What you don’t want to happen is for the eyelashes to make your eyelids look ‘droopy’.

For the eyebrows, use a very dark eyebrow pencil, or gel eyeliner (like Tormentor) and fill in the eyebrows with an angled brush. Use brow wax to tame any hairs that fall out of place.
.

Apply foundation over your lips and set with powder, this will enable you to draw a lip line which differs from your natural shape. Using a lip brush, draw a small cupid bow shape on your lips with a deep burgundy colour. Using black lipstick (or black eyeliner as I did, as I didn’t have black lipstick on hand) fill in the centre graduating the colour outwards, blending it in with the burgundy colour. Apply a thick layer of shiny deep burgandy lip gloss over the lipstick (clear gloss would work splendidly as well). Lastly using concealer draw a precise line around the lip shape you have drawn to prevent the lipstick from bleeding

Style Division: Madame Bones

By Destroyx | May 19, 2009

Introducing Miss Amelia Arsenic as the infamous Madame Bones…

A chain smoking funeral parlor owner by day and by night a renegade jewelry maker. Madame Bones made a name for herself with her exquisite bone jewelry derived from the finest ivory. Rumours have it her materials are exotic in origin, with many believing she creatively disposes of the bodily remains of recently departed aristocrats.

I was one of those girls that spent most of their childhood playing dress ups alone, creating crazy characters inspired by reading too many books. My personal style has always been about creating characters so I guess some things never change!

With this outfit, I wanted to wear some of my favourite skeletal inspired pieces together. Naturally I thought my living room decorated with anatomical imagery would be a good backdrop for the photographs. The room is super narrow, so I had to sit on the top part of the couch to get a full length shot!

The makeup tutorial for this look will be coming on Thursday. It seems I’ve only been posting makeup and personal style posts recently, but I hope to get a little more variety happening on the site in the next few weeks!

Fingerless Leather Gloves: Mimco
Ruffle Top:
Mango
Skeleton hands necklace:
Kreepsville 666
Bow Headband:
Me! (will be available in my upcoming accessories collection)
Ruffle shorts: Leg Avenue
Anatomical Corset: Louise Black
Green Leopard print garter belt: Agent Provocateur
Stockings: Cheap cut up Halloween tights worn over Agent Provocateur seam and heel hold ups
Shoes: Pleaser

Makeup Mayhem: Leopard Love

By Destroyx | May 12, 2009

As I was going for a rockabilly/vintage with a twist, I decided to combine a mysterious smokey eye look with a classic cat eye shape for this makeup look.

Eyes: Tormentor & Dada Eyeliner, Coma, Black Alice & Diamond Dogs Eyeshadow, Two Faced Shadow Insurance, Lancome eyebrow pencil, MAC Liquid Eyeliner in ‘Boot Black’ for the beauty spot.

Eyelashes: Drunken Butterfly eyelashes

Lips: MAC Matte lipstick in ‘Ruby Woo’ Russian Red, MAC 3d Glass in ‘Boundless’

Face: MAC Studio Fix, MAC Select Cover-up, Icecream eyeshadow (as blush)

To achieve a smooth flawless foundation look, I recommend using a brush instead of a foam pad because it wastes less product and applies more evenly. After foundation has been applied, apply concealer to cover any dark or red areas. I use a dabbing motion when applying concealer, especially under the eyes to prevent streakiness.

The vintage look calls for a matte flawless complexion which can best be achieved by a light dusting of finishing powder or translucent blot powder. Here I am wearing my own formulation (available soon!), but there are several brands which make their kind of powder. A good finishing powder will create a ’soft focus’ appearance and leave your skin feeling very smooth.

On the high cheekbones apply a light dusting of candy coloured pink blush (I used Miss X eyeshadow in ‘ice cream‘) with a blush brush. Continue a light coating of blush onto the temples to emphasise the cheekbone shape and add more dimension to the face (preventing it from looking flat).
.

Before applying eye makeup, be sure to prime the eye lids to ensure that the colour has longevity and applies strongly. Here I used Two Faced Shadow Insurance and highly recommend investing in this product.

Using an angle eyeliner brush, apply Tormentor (true black eyeliner) in a cat eye shape. Make sure you don’t use too much product on your brush so that you can achieve an extremely precise line. Before the gel eyeliner has dried, pat Black Alice (glittery black eyeshadow) over the eyeliner with a small eyeshadow brush. With a medium sized eyeliner brush apply Black Alice to only half of the eyelid, blending it outwards. I didn’t want a strong opaque coating of black eyeshadow, so I only used a tiny amount of product on the brush (it’s very potent, so don’t use too much at once!). Afterwards with a medium eyeshadow brush apply Coma (pearly white eyeshadow) on the outer half of the eyelid. Using a fluffy blending brush, blend the black into the white. Using Diamond Dogs (glittery translucent white eyeshadow) as a highlighter colour apply with a small eyeshadow brush to the inner corners of the eye and on the brow bone for a subtle sparkle.

Under the eyes, apply Dada (white eyeliner) under the eyes, including the water line. Before the white eyeliner has dried, apply Coma over the top, blending the white on the inner corners of the eyes. The white eyeliner under your eyes will make them appear bigger. Using your angle eyeliner brush draw a line underneath your eyes parallel to the cateye shape you drew before with Tormentor. Make the center of the line slightly thicker and make the line look less stark by smudging it with a cotton tip. Lastly apply Drunken Butterfly false eyelashes on your upper eyelids.

Wax or gel your eyebrows into submission and then fill in your eyebrows using an eyebrow pencil.

The finishing touch for any retro inspired look is a beauty spot. I like to apply mine on my favourite winking eye and I find it’s the easiest with an eyeliner with a felt tip. I used MAC Liquid Eyeliner in ‘Boot Black’.
.

Using a lip brush apply red lip stick (here I used MAC ‘Ruby Woo’) on your lips. For ridiculously vampy lips, apply a red gloss over the top. I used MAC 3d Glass which is probably my favourite lip gloss because it has tiny sparkly particles that add dimension to the lips. To prevent the lip colour from bleeding as it is often prone to, apply concealer with a clean lip brush around the edges of the lip stick. This will also emphasise your lip shape making your lips really pop!

Style Division: Leopard Love

By Destroyx | May 11, 2009

I’ve always through the rockabilly/vintage/retro thing was cool, but I’ve never really been able to do it without putting my own spin on it because I’m no Dita von Teese. Would you believe I’m actually wearing a leopard print leotard? The last time I wore one was back in my ballet days when I was 12. I never thought I’d be rocking a leotard or ‘playsuit’ as I prefer to call it 11 years later!

To top off this look I experimented with my vintage hair skills. I think the results are a cross between Rachel from Bladerunner and Jessica Rabbit. I still have a lot to learn though.

I would have loved to get some full length shots, but the room is extremely narrow and it was impossible to get the length needed. However, I do want to do more outfit shots with this playsuit perhaps styled differently with alternate accessories. I was thinking a black bow belt and giant head eating bows.

The tutorial for this makeup look will be coming on Wednesday. All makeup (except lips and foundation) is by Miss X. I’m trying to shoot a different look every week, which is a fun challenge that I’m really enjoying. So stay tuned for the results!

Leopard Leotard (!): Agent Provocateur
Leather ruched gloves: Topshop

I’m also wearing black opaque stockings and pony fur leopard heels, but they aren’t in shot.
